Handicare 1000 Stairlift in San Diego & Orange County, CA
Rack-and-Pinion Drive, Outdoor-Ready Option
The Handicare 1000: strong, adaptable and tough enough for outside
The Handicare 1000 is a straight stairlift sold by Savaria under the Handicare name. It uses a hidden rack-and-pinion drive on an anodized aluminum rail, comes with a choice of seats, and is one of the few straight stairlifts in the Savaria line that can also be specified for outdoor use in moderate climates. Advantage Elevator sells, installs and services it across San Diego and Orange County.
People usually land on the 1000 for one of three reasons. The rider needs a higher weight capacity than most straight stairlifts offer. The staircase has a door or landing at the bottom that the rail has to clear. Or the stairs are outside, on a hillside lot or at a side entry, and an indoor-only lift will not do.
- 350 lb standard capacity, with a 440 lb option on the Smart seat
- Manual or powered hinged rail for a door at the bottom landing
- 24-month warranty against defective parts, through your local dealer, with regular maintenance required

Who the 1000 suits
The 1000 is the straight stairlift we point to when the rider is larger, when comfort matters on a long climb, or when the staircase is awkward. The 440 lb option on the Smart seat is the main reason. We do not like to push any lift to the limit of its rating, so a higher ceiling gives you margin.
It also suits people who want a semi-standing ride. The Perch seat lets a rider with stiff knees or hips travel in a perched position instead of sitting fully. It is a good fit for someone who can stand but cannot manage a full flight of stairs.
The power swivel and power folding footrest are worth a look for riders with limited hand or arm strength. With both options, the seat turns toward the landing and the footrest folds up without any lifting.
Fitting the 1000 to Southern California stairs
Two-story tract homes from the 1970s and 1980s often have a straight staircase that lands directly at an entry door or a hallway. If the rail would run into a swinging door at the bottom, the hinged rail solves it. The rail tips up when the lift is parked, and a powered hinge does it at the touch of a button. For the top of the stairs, rail extension brackets are available where a door sits at the top landing.
Coastal and hillside homes bring a different mix. Entry stairs from a driveway down to a front door, or from a patio down to a garden level, are common in places like La Jolla, Point Loma, Laguna Beach and Dana Point. Those stairs see sun, marine air and the occasional wet winter. The outdoor-ready 1000 uses UV-resistant parts and zinc hardware for that exposure. We look at your stairs, the direction they face and how exposed they are before we recommend it, and we say so plainly if a different approach is better.
Folded depth is 15 1/4 in, a little deeper than some slimmer models, so we check the clear width on your stairs during the measure.
Installation, service and maintenance
We install and service stairlifts in San Diego and Orange County from our Carlsbad and Costa Mesa offices. The process starts with a free in-home measure. We measure the stairs, check the landings and doors, and talk through seats and options. After that you get a written quote. The rail is then built to your staircase, and we install it and test it with you.
Advantage Elevator holds California contractor license CSLB C-11 #1027832, has been in business for more than 20 years, and carries a 4.9-star Google rating across more than 300 reviews. The 1000 warranty requires regular maintenance, and our maintenance plans are built to satisfy that. Local detail is on our San Diego stairlift page and Orange County stairlift page.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much weight can the Handicare 1000 carry?
The standard rating is 350 lb. With the Smart seat it can be specified to 440 lb, and with the Perch seat the rating is 300 lb. We confirm the exact rating for your configuration on the quote.
Can the Handicare 1000 go outside?
Yes, in moderate climates. Savaria offers it with UV-resistant parts, zinc hardware and a slate seat for outdoor stairs. We assess your exposure before we recommend it.
What if there is a door at the bottom of my stairs?
The 1000 offers a hinged rail, manual or powered, so the bottom of the rail can fold up and clear the door. Rail extension brackets are available for a door at the top landing.
How is the 1000 different from the Handicare 1100?
The 1000 uses a rack-and-pinion drive, carries more weight and is available for outdoor stairs. The 1100 is an indoor model with a friction drive and a shorter maximum rail. See the 1100 page for its details.
How long is the warranty?
Savaria lists 24 months against defective parts, through your local dealer, with regular maintenance required.
