Handicare 1100 Stairlift in San Diego & Orange County, CA
A Compact Indoor Straight Stairlift
The Handicare 1100: compact, indoor, with a rail that slides out of the doorway
The Handicare 1100 is an indoor straight stairlift with one feature that sets it apart: a Slide Track option. When the lift is parked, the rail retracts out of the doorway at the bottom of the stairs, so you can walk through the door without stepping over a rail. Advantage Elevator sells, installs and services the 1100 in San Diego and Orange County.
The 1100 does not use a gear rack. It drives by friction, using four motors. It is rated 310 lb and has a single vanilla vinyl seat with a retractable belt. It suits an adult of average build who needs a dependable, compact lift on an indoor staircase of moderate length.
- 310 lb capacity (287 lb above a 46-degree incline)
- Slide Track and easy-hinge options for a door at the bottom landing
- Indoor use only; for outdoor stairs see the Handicare 1000

1100 or 1000: how to choose
The two Handicare straight models overlap, so it helps to compare them on the things that decide the job.
- Weight: the 1100 is rated 310 lb. The 1000 is rated 350 lb, with a 440 lb option.
- Rail length: the 1100 runs up to 23 ft. The 1000 runs up to 32 ft. Most two-story homes sit well inside either figure, but a long flight with a mid-landing may need the 1000.
- Location: the 1100 is indoor only. The 1000 is offered for outdoor stairs in moderate climates.
- Doorway: the 1100 offers the Slide Track and the easy-hinge. The 1000 offers a manual or powered hinge.
- Drive: the 1100 is friction-driven with no rack. The 1000 uses a rack and pinion.
If the stairs are indoors, the rider is of average build and the bottom door is the main concern, the 1100 is often the better choice. If any of those points change, the answer may too. See the Handicare 1000 for the stronger option.
Where the 1100 fits in Southern California homes
Many San Diego and Orange County houses built in the 1970s and 1980s have an entry hall that opens straight onto the foot of the stairs. A rail that sticks out into that hall is a trip hazard and blocks the door. The Slide Track on the 1100 answers that: the rail slides out of the doorway when the lift is parked. The easy-hinge option, with a gas strut, is a manual alternative where the budget or the layout calls for it.
The 1100 is also a sensible fit in condominiums and townhomes where staircases are shorter and interiors are tight. Its folded depth is under 13 inches, which leaves room on a narrow stair for other people to pass.
The 1100 is not an outdoor lift. If your stairs are outside, on a hillside lot or at a side entry, we will point you to the Handicare 1000 or the Savaria K2 with its outdoor package.
Installation and service
We install and service stairlifts across San Diego and Orange County. A technician visits your home, measures the stairs and the landings, and checks the door positions. You get a written quote after the visit. The rail is built to your stairs, and we install it and test it with you.
Advantage Elevator holds California contractor license CSLB C-11 #1027832 and has been in business for more than 20 years. The 1100 warranty requires regular maintenance, and our maintenance plans meet that requirement. See also our San Diego and Orange County stairlift pages.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a Slide Track stairlift rail?
On the Handicare 1100, the Slide Track is an option that retracts the rail out of the doorway at the bottom of the stairs when the lift is parked. It lets you walk through the door without stepping over the rail.
What is the weight limit on the Handicare 1100?
Savaria rates it 310 lb, and 287 lb on stairs steeper than 46 degrees. If the rider is heavier, the Handicare 1000 or the Savaria K2 Plus may be better choices.
Can I use the 1100 on outdoor stairs?
No. Savaria lists the 1100 for indoor use only. For outdoor stairs, ask us about the Handicare 1000 or the Savaria K2 with its outdoor package.
How long a staircase can the 1100 serve?
The maximum travel is 23 ft (7 m). Most two-story homes are within that. We measure the actual run during the free in-home visit.
What happens if the power goes out?
The 24-volt battery charges continuously along the rail and holds enough charge for several trips, according to Savaria.
