Stairlifts for San Diego County homes

A stairlift is the simplest way to keep using a staircase you can no longer climb comfortably. A seat on a rail carries you up and down, and it folds out of the way when you are not using it. We sell, install and service stairlifts across San Diego County from our Carlsbad office at 5857 Owens Avenue, Suite 300.

We are a Savaria Elite dealer, and Savaria sells the Handicare stairlift line. That gives us straight and curved models that cover most of the staircases we see, from a short run in an Escondido townhome to a long, turning flight in a Point Loma view house. Every stairlift starts with a free in-home measure. Stairs are the most variable part of any house, and a quote over the phone is a guess.

  • Straight and curved models from the Savaria and Handicare range
  • Free in-home measure, then a written quote
  • Licensed California contractor, CSLB C-11 #1027832, 4.9 stars on 300+ Google reviews
  • Service on the lift after installation, from the same local team

Stairlift prices are far less than an elevator. We quote after the free measure, because the staircase decides the price.

The models we install

Handicare K2: straight stairs

The K2 is a straight stairlift for staircases that go from one level to the next without turning. It handles a rail up to 32 feet, and the rail can run along inclines from 30 to 55 degrees. It holds up to 350 lb, or 300 lb with a flip-up rail or on stairs steeper than 45 degrees. It runs on a 24-volt battery charged from household power, so it can keep working in an outage, and it folds up slim against the wall.

Stairfriend 23: curved stairs

A custom twin-rail lift built to your staircase, for stairs with turns, landings or a half-turn at the top. Capacity is 300 lb, with 350 lb optional. It travels at about 20 feet per minute on the straights and slows to about 12 feet per minute in curves.

Handicare 1000 and 1100

Savaria also lists the Handicare 1000 and 1100 straight stairlifts. If either fits your stairs better than the K2, we will walk you through the differences at the measure visit.

Straight or curved? How we decide

A staircase that runs in one straight line, even a long one, is usually a straight-rail job. That is the faster and less expensive option. A staircase with a landing, a turn, or a spiral needs a rail that is custom-built to follow it. That means measurement, manufacturing and a longer lead time, and it costs more. We take photos, measure the rise, run and turns, and tell you which kind you need at the visit.

Many San Diego split-level and multi-story homes have a staircase with a landing or a quarter-turn. Curved lifts are common in La Jolla, Rancho Santa Fe and Del Mar. Straight lifts are common in the 1970s through 1990s tract homes of Poway, Escondido, Rancho Bernardo and Oceanside.

Bluff-top entries and outdoor stairs

San Diego has plenty of homes where the stairs are outside: a long run of steps from a street down to a front door in Point Loma, a bluff-top entry in Solana Beach or Encinitas, a path from a garage up to the house in Mount Soledad. We have seen all of them.

An outdoor staircase is a different problem than an indoor one, because of sun, salt air, rain and the need for a weatherproof design. If your stairs are outside, tell us when you call. We will look at the stairs in person and tell you what is available for them, or whether a different solution, such as a ramp, a wheelchair lift or an elevator, makes more sense. We will not sell you an indoor lift for an outdoor job.

Stairlift or home elevator?

A stairlift is the right answer if one person needs help on one staircase and the stairs are wide enough to share. It is quick to install, takes far less money and does not need construction. Its limits are real, though. It moves one person at a time, a wheelchair user still has to transfer onto the seat, and the folded lift still occupies part of the stair.

A home elevator serves a wheelchair or walker directly, carries two people and luggage, and leaves the stairs free. It costs more, typically Pricing depends on the model, number of stops and construction — see what a home elevator costs. If your need is likely to grow, or more than one floor is involved, it deserves a look. We are an elevator company first, so we will tell you honestly when a stairlift is all you need. See our elevator installation page to compare.

What to expect: measure, install, service

We visit, measure the staircase, ask about the person who will use it, and check where a power outlet and a parking position at the top and bottom would go. You get a written quote. Once you approve it, a straight lift is typically installed in a single visit. A curved lift is built to order, then installed once it arrives.

After installation we show you how to use the controls, the seatbelt and the swivel. We service stairlifts, and we can look at a lift installed by someone else. If your battery is aging or your lift is making noise, call us.

Savaria products carry a 36-month parts warranty through the local dealer, which requires regular maintenance. Ask us how that applies to your stairlift. We do not promise that insurance or Medicare will pay for a stairlift, so check your own coverage.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a stairlift cost in San Diego?

A stairlift costs far less than an elevator. The price depends mostly on whether your stairs are straight or curved and how long they are. We quote after a free in-home measure.

How long does stairlift installation take?

A straight stairlift is typically installed in a single visit. A curved lift is custom-built to your staircase, so there is a manufacturing lead time before installation.

Will the stairlift work during a power outage?

The K2 runs on a 24-volt battery that is charged from household power, so it can keep operating through an outage. Ask us about the specific model you choose.

Can a stairlift go on outdoor stairs?

Outdoor stairs need a separate evaluation because of weather and salt air. Tell us when you call, and we will look at the stairs and tell you what is available, or recommend a different solution.

Do I need a stairlift or an elevator?

A stairlift suits one rider and one staircase. An elevator suits wheelchair users, multiple floors and households whose needs will grow. We will help you compare both during a free visit.

Crystal did a great job in doing the yearly maintenance work on my personal elevator. She identified why the elevator stopped working. She showed me how to make the elevator go to the ground floor if stuck midway. She vacuumed & cleaned the space on the ground floor where the elevator sits; it was so filthy most likely because it was never cleaned by previous technicians. She's very nice & calm.
